OBITUARY FROM NW INDIANA TIMES, MAY 9, 2016:
Nick A. Sweigart, 81, of Crown Point passed away on Thursday, May 5, at home with Shirlee, his wife of almost 27 years, by his side.
Nick was preceded in death by parents: Bert and Daisy Sweigart; brother, Jack; wife, Constance; and son, David. He is survived by his wife, Shirlee; son, Michael; daughter, Patty; daughter, Susan Lewis; stepdaughters, Nancy and Julie Thompson; seven grandchildren: Christopher, Kelly Michelle, Heather, Samantha, Nathan, Kassem, and Hala; and two great-grandchildren: Jacob and Katie.
Nick was a lifelong resident of Lake County and a 1952 graduate of Lew Wallace High School. He was an educator for 55 years. He received his Bachelors, Masters, and Educational Specialist degrees from Indiana State University. He was a business teacher in Gary, guidance counselor and assistant principal in Crown Point, assistant principal and assistant superintendent in Hobart, principal of Kankakee Valley High School, assistant principal and principal of Barker Middle School in Michigan City, and guidance counselor at Elston Middle School in Michigan City. Nick and Shirlee retired in 2011. Nick officiated high school and small college basketball, baseball, and football for over 40 years. He officiated the 1981 high school basketball state championship game. He worked two high school football and baseball state championship games plus four American Legion state baseball finals. He was inducted into the Lake County Athletic Officials Association Hall of Fame in April 2015. He was a member of the Crown Point First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Secondary Association of School Principals, Lake County Phi Delta Kappa, Lake County Athletic Officials Association (Past President), Calumet Officials Association, and Indiana High School Athletic Association. Nick was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and rarely missed watching a game.
Nick was a caring, giving, and loving person who touched so many lives. He will be so missed! We will forever love you, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and Friend! Thank you for your last earthly words you spoke to me, Nick! YOU ARE AMAZING, TOO!
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00PM at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre located at 606 E. 113th Ave./South St. Crown Point, IN. 46307. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 12:00 Noon at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre with Pastor Mark Wilkins of First United Methodist Church officiating.
