Robert A. Weith, 76, of Bloomington passed away on Saturday January 6, 2024, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Bob was born on August 22, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Walter and Irene (Eilken) Weith.
He was a 1965 graduate of Walther Lutheran High School in Melrose Park, Illinois, where he was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame for earning all-conference honors in football, baseball and wrestling. Bob attended Valparaiso University, and then Indiana University, where he graduated in 1969 with his Bachelor’s Degree in Residential Programs and Services. In 1971 he received his Master’s Degree from Indiana University in English Education. Bob married Sandra M. Zimmermann on July 28, 1973, in Elmhurst, Illinois. They were happily married for fifty-one years.
Immediately after college, Bob taught English and coached track and football in Hobart, Indiana. In 1973 Bob and Sandy moved to Macomb, Illinois, as graduate assistants at Western Illinois University. In 1975 Bob worked at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, as a residence hall director and in 1978 went to Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri, as the Assistant Director of Residence Halls. Bob returned to Bloomington, Indiana, in 1984 for residence hall operations and student discipline at Indiana University. He retired in 2013 as Director of Residential Operations.
Bob loved music and especially the classic country, rock and Americana genres. He enjoyed reading Sherlock Holmes, gardening, and traveling. He was a Chicago and Indiana University sports fan, excelled at playing racquetball and softball, and hosted numerous gatherings for his IU friends and family. He was a mentor to many and a cherished friend to all who loved and knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sandy of Bloomington; his sister, Wendy (Bill) Fraser of Stony Plain Alberta, Canada; sister-in-law, Melanie (William) Radkiewicz; nieces and nephews, Wil (Elizabeth) Fraser; Dave (Jennifer) Fraser; Jacob (Heidi) Radkiewicz; Mary (Andrew) Rostenberg; Jared (Caroline) Radkiewicz; great nieces and nephews, David Fraser; Brett Fraser; Ethan Fraser; Benjamin Fraser; Kellen Fraser; Wyatt Radkiewicz; Summer Radkiewicz; Wesley Rostenberg; Benjamin Rostenberg; June Rostenberg; Louis Radkiewicz and Cecilia Radkiewicz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Irene Weith; his sister, Barbara Weith; and niece, Lara Fraser.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old St Rd 37 Bloomington. Friends and family will share remembrances at 5:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Public Library and WFHB community radio station in Bloomington.
