Dorothy Dunning Ballantyne (Teacher)

OBITUARY FROM NW TIMES, JULY 3, 2007:

Dorothy Mae Dunning Ballantyne passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2007. Dorothy was born March 17, 1910 in Aetna, IN to Henry L. and Ella Larson Dunning. She was married June 24, 1934 to Donald B. Ballantyne. Survived by daughters: Elin (Stanley) Christianson of Hobart, IN, Dee (Bob) Ballantyne-Eastwood of Healdsburg, CA and Brianne (Clarence) Lowery of Independence, KY; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Dorothy was an active volunteer and won many awards for community service, among them, Hobart's "Laura Bracken Award" in 1968; Distinguished Service Award from West Hobart Civic Club in 1970; 12 Most Valuable Women Lake County, Tradewinds, 1978; Citizen of the Year by St. Mary Medical Center in 1997; Woman of the Year by local chapter of AARP in 1998; Grand Marshal of Hobart's July 4th parade in 1999; and Volunteer of the Year award by the Legacy Foundation in 2000. She was a member of St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary with over 7300 hours of service; First Methodist Church of Hobart where she edited the church newsletter for 30 years; a 75-year member of Hobart Chapter 314, Order of the Eastern Star where she served as the Worthy Matron in 1938 and District Deputy in 1940; the Hobart Historical Society where she was a charter member, past president and acted as museum director for 35 years. Dorothy was the author of George Earle & Family of Hobart, Indiana, On The Route: A History of the Hobart, Indiana Post Office and Postmasters; Growing up in Hobart; and Hobart Memories. She was employed by the Lake County Auditor's Office and the Hobart Gazette in the 1930's. In the 1960's, Dorothy substitute taught at Hobart High School and later as a special education teacher.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ballantyne in 1973 and son, Alexander in 2003. Memorial donations may be made to the Hobart Historical Society, P.O. Box 24, Hobart, IN 46342.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN with Rev. Alex Stone officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at Crown Hill Cemetery, Hobart, IN. Order of the Eastern Star service will be held Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
