In Memory

Mary Matis (Teacher)

OBITUARY FROM DIGNITY MEMORIAL WEBSITE:

Mary Elizabeth Matis
APRIL 14, 1921 – JUNE 15, 2010

Mary Elizabeth Matis (Flynn), 89, widow of Joseph William Matis, passed away early Tuesday morning in her home in Beech Grove, Indiana. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, she met her husband while teaching in Hobart, Indiana. She later taught at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and Holy Name Grade School in Beech Grove. Having a servants heart, Mary was heavily involved in the Ave Maria Guild, the Meals on Wheels program, Holy Name Catholic Church and Altar Society and St. Francis Hospital. While in Sarasota she was a member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church, served in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and she and Joe volunteered for the White Sox during spring training. Grandma was an avid card player and bowler, who claimed to have bowled a three-hundred and one (because you can’t bowl a three hundred and lose).

She was a family first mother who passed that down to each of her four children: Jane Regensburg (Bob - deceased), Joseph M (Connie), James W (Cathy) and Judy Christoffersen (Curt); her ten grand-children, Joey (Leah), Michael, Katie, Jenny, Willie, Brian, Andy, Micky, Luke and Sammy, and her two great-grandchildren, Joey and Ray. She is survived by her brother, Franklin Flynn (Rosemary) of Poplar Grove Illinois. Mary was not only a friend, mother and grandma …she was a grand lady. She was the Matriarch of the Matis family who will be remembered by so many for the hugs she shared.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ave Maria Guild or her beloved Holy Name parish. Friends may call Friday, June 18, 2010 from 3-7 pm at Little and Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial Calvary Cemetery. littleandsonsbeechgrove.com
