Robert Burns, age 69, of Hobart passed away Wednesday October 9, 2024, in his home with his family by his side. Robert was born January 10, 1955, in Gary, Indiana to the late Junior R. and Elsie Mae (Spangler) Burns. He retired from Iron Workers Local Union #395. Bob was an avid fisherman that had a special breading mix for his famous fish fries. He was also a die-hard CUBS fan. He would help anyone in need without hesitation. Bob was a US Naval Veteran that served during the Vietnam Era, and a member of VFW Post # 5365. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Hobart and the Kendallville Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Vanessa of Hobart; three children, Angela Burns of Hobart, Nicholas (Sarah Nitz) Cooper of Hobart, and Derek (KayLee) Cooper of Hobart; a stepchild, Josh (Theresa) Grant of Clare, Michigan; three grandchildren, CatieAnna Smolen, Aaron Cooper, and Brighton Robert Burns; three step grandchildren, Jaydin Grant, Connor Grant, and Ethan Grant; seven brothers, sisters, and sister-in-law; Kim (Randy) Olson of Hobart, Ruth Ann Burns of Hobart, William (Melinda) Mueller of Barnesville, GA, Heidi (Bill) Kirkman of Ponte Verda, FL; Holly (Andy) Gunning of Chapel Hill, NC, Heather Wells of Valparaiso, and Harry Charles (Denise) Dockter; two stepbrothers, Nick Maroulis, and Stavro Maroulis; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Junior R. Burns; mother, Elsie Mae (Harry C.) Dockter; stepfather, William Mueller; brother, Mark Burns; and stepbrother, John Barth.
Visitation for Bob will be held Sunday October 13, 2024, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home 600 W. Old Ridge Road Hobart, Indiana 46342. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Monday at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Blake Cemetery Portage, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Robert’s family.
