Mr. Norman Jay Poe Obituary

Norman Jay Poe, 90, of Columbus passed from this life at 2:16 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis. Born on May 26, 1935, in Shelbyville, Indiana, Norman was a beloved son, father, grandfather, and educator who left an indelible mark on the lives of those he touched. Mr. Poe married Kay Arlene Ludington June 28, 1958; she preceded him in death January 10, 2025

The son of the late Amile Wallace Poe and Pauline Breantha Dodds Poe Smith, Norman grew up in a household that valued education and community. He carried these values throughout his life, inspiring his students and loved ones with his dedication and warmth. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his cherished son, Mike Poe, who passed away on April 2, 2018, and his brother, Richard Poe.

Norman's academic journey led him to Ball State University, where he earned a master’s degree in biology. His passion for the subject was evident in his long and distinguished career as a high school biology teacher. He spent two years at Hobart High School before dedicating 35 years to Columbus North High School, retiring in 1995. Norman's influence extended beyond the classroom, as he shaped countless young minds with his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sciences.

Surviving Norman is his son, Greg (Lynne) Poe of Greenwood, his daughter-in-law Kristin Poe of Greenwood, and his adored grandchildren, Sam, Michelle, and Brett Poe. His sister-in-law Marlene Poe of Fishers and several nieces and nephews also remain to honor his memory. Norman's legacy as a family man is evident in the love and devotion he showed to his family, particularly his grandchildren, whom he adored with all his heart.

Norman's life was rich with interests and community involvement. Norman served in the Indiana Army National Guard being honorably discharged February 1, 1961. He was a proud member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he engaged in fellowship and service. In his younger years, Norman was a multisport athlete at Shelbyville High School, earning 12 letters and demonstrating his competitive spirit and athleticism. His love for sports transitioned into a passion for playing tennis and shooting firearms, activities he enjoyed throughout his life.

Above all, Norman was devoted to his wife and family. His love for them was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. Norman also found joy in traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures, which further enriched his life and the stories he could share.

Norman's memory will be cherished and celebrated by his family, friends, former students, and colleagues as they remember a life well-lived and a man well-loved.

The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Nick Robinson officiating.
