Leroy John Gerl was born on October 13, 1941 in Chilton as the son of the late Edward and Ann (Oskey) Gerl. He graduated from Seymour High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UW Platteville and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts, Architecture, and Education from Ball State in Indiana. Leroy was united in marriage to Janice “Jan” Eickstead on October 1, 1966 in Hobart, IN where he began his high school Industrial Arts teaching career. A short time later in 1967 the couple moved back to Wisconsin where Leroy was a beloved shop teacher at Oconto High School; also serving as the Track and Cross Country coach for many years. Leroy retired in 1996 after a long and fulfilling career; cherishing the many friendships he made both with staff and students alike. He taught night classes for NWTC and did countless woodworking projects for many Oconto area residents and organizations. Leroy spent a number of summers working for Cruisers in Oconto. He earned his captains license which led to a position as a Training Director for Hatteras yachts in NC. Leroy loved using his woodworking skills to provide gifts for his family and friends; always keeping an eye out for a unique branch to create the perfect walking stick for a number of folks throughout the years. He was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Oconto where he sang in the choir and at one time taught CCD with Jan.
