Barbara Jean (Baker) Burkland, age 75 of Hobart passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on June 3, 1948, in Gary, Indiana to the late George and Elaine Baker. She graduated from Hobart High School in 1967. On May 3, 1969, she married Robert Burkland. Barbara retired from Lake Station Schools where she worked as a remedial reading teacher. She was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Barbara was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Altar and Rosary Sodality, the OLS Senior Club, Children’s Liturgy and Rainbows, the Red Hat Society, the Lake Station VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Tripoly Club. She enjoyed gardening, laughter, volunteering, email, her clubs, and spending time with her dear family and friends.  

She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Robert Burkland; son, Daniel (Debbi) Burkland; grandson, Skyler (Kayleigh) Burkland; great grandchildren, Brody, Oaklynn, and Knox Burkland; sister in law, Jan (Burkland) Connell; and many loving family members and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her sons, David and Robert Burkland, Jr.; and her parents, George and Elaine Baker. 

Memorial contributions in Barbara’s name may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 356 W. 700 N. Valparaiso, IN 46385. 

Visitation for Barbara will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart, Indiana. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. John Zemelko officiating. She will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Portage, Indiana.
