Sarah (Sally) Baird (Fouse) - Class Of 1954

OBITUARY IN GAINESVILLE (FLORIDA) SUN, AUGUST 22, 2014:

Sarah Baird Fouse, 78, of Gainesville, passed away August 19, 2014 at Haven Hospice. Born in Gary, Indiana, in 1935, she attended the University of Michigan majoring in music. Before coming to Florida, Sarah taught at the University of Kentucky from 1961 to 1966. While there, she was Principle Flutist with the Lexington Philharmonic and founding member of the Board of Directors.

In 1966, Sarah moved to Gainesville teaching for 35 years at the University of Florida School of Music. She was a performing member of the Florida Baroque Ensemble, the Florida Woodwind Quintet, and the Florida Sinfonietta. In addition, she regularly performed solo recitals. Sarah served on the Board of Directors of the National Flute Association from 1974 to 1975 and was Convention Program Chair of the 1975 Convention. She continued to be actively involved with that organization throughout her life. She wrote many articles pertaining to flutes. In Gainesville, Sarah was founder of the Gainesville Flute Ensemble and cofounder of the Florida Flute Association. She performed with the International Flute Orchestra, traveling to and performing in many countries throughout the world, including France, Poland, USSR (then), and China.

At 65, Sarah retired, continuing her work with many flute associations and teaching private students. In 2002 she was inducted in the Carl A. Lampert Music Hall of Fame; School of Music, University of Kentucky.
Sarah is survived by her husband, Claude Fouse, her sister Melissa Kiriel Ellis, her nephews, Kenneth and Ryan, her brother-in-law and his children. Plus hundreds of dedicated students, loyal colleagues, and faithful friends.

A Celebration of her life will be held at a future date to be announced.
