OBITUARY FROM THE "WHAT'S NEW LAPORTE" COMMUNITY WEBSITE, OCTOBER 21, 2012:
Mr. Garth A. Conrad, 56, of LaPorte, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at his home.
He was born Oct. 29, 1955, in Hobart, IN, to Warren and Jean (Burress) Conrad.
Garth was a landscape designer and a founding partner of Quail Ridge Nursery and Landscaping Inc. He designed hundreds of landscapes from northern Illinois to southwest Michigan, ranging from cottage gardens to large estates. He served as president of Quail Ridge Farms and as president of Garth A. Conrad Associates, a design-and-build landscape company.
Garth was very active in the environmental field. He taught landscape design at Purdue North Central and was an active member of MELA, the Midwest Ecological Landscape Association, serving on their Board of Directors and as president. He organized conferences and seminars on sustainable landscape practices and advocated an industry-wide, sustainable approach on environmental issues. He was also on the board of the international APLD, the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, and served as chair of several committees on environmental and professional landscape issues. He was a graduate of Indiana University.
Garth leaves many friends and a legacy of integrity and vision to all who knew him.
He is survived by his mother, Jean Conrad, and brother, Mark Conrad, both of Hobart; sister, Myrna (Bill) Smar of Sugar Grove, IL; niece, Casey Jean of Chicago; and longtime friends and business partners, Paul and Miki Bartholomew of LaPorte.
Garth was preceded in death by his father.
The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 3 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Richard Poole officiating. Cremation will take place. Burial of ashes will take place at Posey Chapel Cemetery, LaPorte, at a later date.
