Douglas (Doug) "Chopper" Perney - Class Of 1975

OBITUARY FROM BURNS FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Douglas Kip Perney “Chopper”, age 67 passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2024. Doug left behind the love of his life, Mary Ellen (Schmelter) and cherished memories to all those who knew and loved him dearly. Doug was born on August 15, 1956, in Gary, Indiana and raised in Hobart, Indiana. He graduated in 1975 from Hobart High School and played football for the Hobart Brickies, good old ‘32'. Doug worked as a Teamster for Local 142 at various companies. He enjoyed collecting guitars and perfecting the ultimate sound through fine tuning and a sharp ear. Doug was known as the "Hi-Fi" guy and was sought out for his wisdom and knowledge when making a large purchase, because he enjoyed wheeling and dealing. Doug also enjoyed spending time camping, fishing, and taking a ride on his motorcycle. He was blessed to be a recipient of a lung transplant in 2002.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; Gordan and Cleo (Mock) Perney and his nephew; Jeff Klosky. He is survived by his wife; Mary Ellen (Schmelter), his brothers; Bruce and James; sisters; Denise (Dan) Michael, Cheryl (Jim) Starkey, Bonnie (Mark) Foster; along with many nieces and nephews. He was much beloved by the Schmelter family, and he will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, from 9am - 9:45am at Burns Funeral Home, 701 East 7th Street, Hobart, Indiana followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Bridget Church, 102 Center Street, Hobart, Indiana.
