Joan was my cousin and died in July, 1958 at the age of 16 as a result of injuries from an auto accident a couple weeks earlier. That was the summer between her junior and senior year.  The last time I was down 61st Ave, the tree they hit was still there.  The accident occurred when the 90 degree turns were still there. Some years later is when they rebuilt 61st to the soft curves that are there now.
