HOBART - Eleanor Hawke always went the extra mile to spend time with those she loved. "She did not miss graduations, anniversaries or birthdays," said her son, Tom Hawke. He said his mother even traveled to Japan when her first grandchild was born in the Far Eastern country. "Mom was adamant about being with her family," he said.

Mrs. Hawke, 84, of Hobart, died July 13 at her home. For more than 30 years, Mrs. Hawke celebrated Independence Day surrounded by her entire family. Her son said she planned and prepared for the traditional American holiday with great enthusiasm. She would arrange trips to visit out-of-town relatives and regularly treated her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to trips that took them to the family-owned cottage in Vicksburg, Mich. "Mom loved it up there, it was her favorite place," her son said. Mrs. Hawke was fond of being outdoors, fishing and swimming. She also was an avid reader and loved to knit. Her son said whenever a baby was born to a family member or good friend, his mother would beautifully knit a layette for the newborn. "That was a tradition with her," Hawke said. Mrs. Hawke was a member of Hobart First United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association and was a former member of Phi Beta Psi.

She is survived by one son, Tom (Sally) Hawke of Valparaiso; two daughters, Betsy (David) Kietzman of Hobart and Dorothy (Jack) Holland of Hebron; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; and a brother-in-law.
