PORTAGE - The saying "once a Brickie fan, always a Brickie fan" held true for August John "Bud" Massa.

A 1944 graduate of Hobart High School, he played clarinet in the marching band and lettered in both track and cross country.

Until two years ago, when he became too ill to attend, Mr. Massa never missed a football game at Brickie Bowl.

Mr. Massa, 71, died May 21 at St. Mary Medical Center. He struggled with emphysema for several years and had been bedridden for about a year.

An avid fisherman with a small fishing boat, he fished on Lake George in Hobart and took yearly fishing trips to various lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan, his daughter Gerry Fessler said.

His love of the outdoors was shared by the whole family. He often took his grandchildren fishing with him. Mr. Massa always had a huge garden. "I'll really miss that - he always shared his bounty," Fessler said.

Fessler described her father as a "really good man and a gentle person." His family was very important to him. He enjoyed cook-outs and holiday and birthday celebrations at his daughter's house. "He really enjoyed sitting on my screened-in porch," Fessler said.

An area resident since 1937, he was a cement finisher for Star Construction and was a member of the Plasters and Cement Masons Union Local 692.

Mr. Massa is survived by his wife, Mary Massa; two daughters, Gerry Fessler and Jackie Massa; one son, Frank Massa; three granddaughters, Dina, Debra and Dawn Fessler; one grandson, Frank Massa Fellows; one stepdaughter, Fran Rayce; two stepsons, Peter and Paul Massa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 23 at Rees Funeral Home in Hobart with interment in Graceland Cemetery.
