Hobart -- Jean Marie Smith (nee King), 68, a lifelong Hobart resident, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 1999. Married to Stanley F. Smith Jr. on Dec. 13, 1952 at Holy Angels Cathedral, Gary. Jean was a member of St. Bridget Church in Hobart; a member of the Meshowski-To-Quah Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; member and past president of St. Mary Medical Center, Auxiliary; a member of the St. Mary Medical Center Authority; Board appointed in 1980 by Mayor Calvin E. Green; recipient of Katherine Kasper Award from St. Mary Medical Center; a former employee of the Hobart City Court 1980-1984 and retired secretary for the Hobart Police Department Detective Bureau 1984-1998. She worked on the 1980 U.S. Census as crew leader for Hobart. She enjoyed her grandchildren and researching her family history.

Preceded in death by her parents, George and Irene King, brother, Charles King and brothers-in-law, Frank Vedope and Daniel Smith. Survived by husband of 46 years, Stanley F. Smith, Jr. of Hobart; two daughters, Karen (Richard) Hammersmith of Portage and Catherine (Robert) Klus of Hammond; six grandchildren, Shannon (Paul) Palichuk of Hobart, Adam McGriffin of Portage, Stephanie (Chris) Wagner of Hobart, Shawn, Joshua and Scott Klus of Hammond; great-grandson, Michael Wagner of Hobart; two sisters, Shirley Vedope of Hobart and Georgia Roush of Indianapolis; four sisters-in-law, Doris King of Hobart, Camille Stackert of Valparaiso, Nancy Smith of Crown Point and Delphine Brock of Hobart; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services Saturday, January 23, 1999 at 9:15 a.m. at the Burns Funeral Home, Hobart, (corner of Rt 51 and 7th Street), to St. Bridget Church for 10 a.m. funeral mass with Rev. Dominic Bertino officiating. Interment at Hobart Cemetery, Hobart. Friends may call at the Burns Funeral Home on Friday from 1 to 3 and 4 to 7 p.m. The St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will hold memorial services Friday at 3 p.m.
