Charles Donald Shinneman, 87, of Hobart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on the 19th of April, 2024. Don was the best of us.
He was born on May 30, 1936 in Gary, IN to Lester Porter Shinneman and Sally Edna Shinneman. At Hobart High School he participated in various sports and graduated in 1955. After graduation, he entered an apprenticeship into IBEW local 697. Don served as journeyman electrician for over 37 years. At age 14, Don met the love of his life Dolores Jones Armstrong “Dee”. He set eyes on “Dee” while participating in Boy Scouts and her in Girl Scouts. They were married on May, 25, 1957. On May 30th 1959 they welcomed their daughter, Jamie Kay Shinneman, on February 3rd 1961 they welcomed their son, Charles Michael Shinneman and on December 14th, 1963 they welcomed their third child, Curtis David Shinneman. In addition to being a loving husband and father, he was an avid hunter and fisher enthusiast. He belonged to Kankakee River Hunting Retriever Club that taught him to retrieve and release. He was known for his friendly personality and contagious jokes which he abundantly shared with his large family and many treasured friends. Don enjoyed spending time at the family Lakehouse with his family and friends. Whether it be out on the boat, tending to the garden or sitting on the front porch with a cold one, he always had the biggest smile being around all of his family at the lake.
Don is preceded in death by his sister, Hallie Preniczny and his father, Lester Shinneman and mother Edna Shinneman and grandson, Curtis Zachary Shinneman. He is survived by his wife, Dolores Shinneman, daughter, Jamie and Michael Maxfield (spouse), son, Charles and Kelly Shinneman (spouse) and son, Curtis and Melissa Shinneman (spouse). His 6 grandchildren, Christopher Shinneman, Andrew Shinneman, Chad Shinneman, Charlie Shinneman, Nathaniel Maxfield and Megan Hernandez. And his 10 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Burns Funeral Home in Hobart, Indiana. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024 at 11:00 am at Burns Funeral Home in Hobart, Indiana.
