Betty Wineinger (Carns) - Class Of 1944

Betty L. Carns, 97, of Portage passed away at home surrounded by her family on April 5, 2024.  She was born September 30, 1926, in Cuzco, Indiana to the late Levi and Olive Wineinger.

Betty married her love, Roy Carns, on June 6, 1946, and together they raised four children and spent 46 years side-by-side until his passing in 1992.  She was a member of the Retail Clerks Union for 18 years and worked for Buy Low Foods in Hobart.  Betty was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary #5365.  When she wasn’t working, Betty enjoyed sewing, making many of her own clothes.  She was also a caregiver for her family, and sometimes strangers as well.  Not only was Betty giving, but she was also forgiving, never holding a grudge against anyone.  She loved her family and friends dearly and will be missed.

Betty is survived by her sons, Mike (Peggy), and Jeff (Carmen) Carns; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Roy, Betty was preceded in passing by her siblings, Eugene, Paul, Clarence, Floyd, Marvin and Leroy Wineinger, and Olive “Fern” Goodwin; son, Ron Carns; daughter, Marsha Wurtzel; and great granddaughter, Destiny Ingram.
