After graduation I attened Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Went into engineering per the recommendation of Mrs. Howell. Walked onto tryouts for the golf team and made it. Found out real fast that engineering and golf don't mix. So that was it. A one year wonder. Graduated in 1973 and accepted a position as an entry level electrical engineer for a consulting firm in Chicago. However, had one little issue to take care of before the money started rolling in. Had a low lottery number and entered the Navy. Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, then nuclear power training in Groton, CN, then assigned to the USS Swordfish nuclear submarine in Charleston, RI. Was there 22 months then President Nixon cut the defense budget and I got out. Went back to work in Chicago. I have been employed here for 37 years now and function as one of our senior managers. In 1976 I found a sport that I was actually very good in besides golf. Joined the Gary (now called Duneland) Ski Club and took up downhill ski racing. Raced "B" Class and ended up winning the Indiana State Council team championship 6 out of 8 years. Met a gal at my buddy's wedding where I was best man and married her 3 years later. For those of you who have travelled through Chicago's O'Hare Airport via United Airlines, I helped pay for that fancy upgrade because she lived in Beaver, PA. Lots of trips back and forth. Lived in Portage and now in Valpo since 1992. At least I found a woman who would put up with my crap. Just got lucky. She's a great wife also and a great athlete. I quit playing golf with my buddies because there was no competition there and actually got tired of winning money off them. She took up golf in 1988 and now I have some real competition. Still shoot a decent game. Low 80's to high 70's. Have travelled a lot on my job. Have 3 years to go before I call it quits. Hope to move to FL or somewhere on the ocean so that I can be a year-round fishing and golfing bum for good. Hopefully a charter boat captain if things work out. My wife started a quilting business 2 years ago and now I do all the house cleaning and cooking. Very domesticated and say "Yes Ma'am and smile". But the wild man in Dave is still there. Just ask Talian if you ever see him. But I'd have to tell you that personally. Not for edification here. Knock on wood. Dave is OK!
