Alfred Spriester, my father, was an Assistant Band Director at Hobart Jr. High school and assistant to Mr. Webb, the High School band director from 1955 - 1960. He earned his BA and MA from Northwestern University and was in the 5th Army Band previous to accepting the Hobart position. He played trumpet, so he probably also gave private trumpet lessons. My mother, Dorothy Spriester, was a french horn player and also had a music education degree from Northwestern University. She gave french horn lessons at the school. We lived on Delaware street and were friends with the Coleman's and Carne's from Hobart. My sisters, Sandy, Laurie and Terri, were born while we lived in Hobart. At that time, my parents had 4 girls (Pam, Sandy, Lori and Terri) and 1 boy (Ron). One more boy was born much later after leaving Hobart. My father accepted the position of music dept. chairman and band director at Deerfield High School, Deerfield, IL upon leaving his Hobart teaching position.
He taught in Deerfield until his retirement in 1987.. While teaching in Deerfield, he began the Deerfield Community Band and played trumpet in the Northshore Community Band conducted by his old classmate John Paynter, then Director of Band at Northwestern University.
If anyone has any Hobart band/music remembrances they would share or stories and remembrances of Mr. Spriester teaching in Hobart, please email me at email@example.com or contact me through this web site. My family have wonderful memories of living in Hobart and my father enjoyed his time teaching at the school.
